Paediatric Cardiac Surgery
Professor Winlaw is a full time paediatric cardiac surgeon. Almost half of the children with congenital heart disease need corrective surgery as a neonate (within 30 days of birth) or as an infant (in the first year of life). The other half have conditions that can safely wait, without affecting growth and development.
This would include conditions such as atrial septal defects, partial atrioventricular canal defects and small ventricular septal defects. Some children also require additional operations, particularly when artificial tubes or valves have been required at the initial operation.
Professor Winlaw works with the Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery program at St Vincent’s Hospital, with a particular interest in the younger patients and those with congenital heart disease.
